Replacing the gear box - 10 Standard

Tools Required: Phillips Screwdriver, Standard Screwdriver

  1. Disconnect the vent pipe and lift slightly on the front of the unit and pull the toilet forward.
  2. The shear pin must be removed by tapping it out with a small punch or nail and the handle has to be taken off.

  3. Remove the thermostat knob by gently prying upward with a standard screwdriver.
  4. Unscrew the compost cover retaining nut by using a standard screwdriver and turning the nut counter-clockwise.  Remove the top by lifting on the front of the top while pushing in on the switch. Once the switch has cleared the hole in the top, lift on the rear of the top. The top may stick slightly due to silicon sealant used in production.

  5. Using a Standard Screwdriver, remove the four screws holding the gearbox in place.

  6. Pull off the plate covering the gears. The four black spacers will need to be moved while changing the gears, but they will be reinstalled in a later step.
  7. Remove large gear by pulling straight up while pushing down on the center shaft.

  8. Remove the handle shaft with the mushroom shaped gear on the bottom.

  9. Push the gear off of the shaft.
  10. Remove the smaller gear that was under the large gear by pulling straight up on it gently.

  11. Install the new smaller gear so that the square center of the gear fits snugly over the square top of the mixing shaft.
  12. Install new mushroom shaped gear onto the handle shaft, with the stem of the gear facing upwards, until the square center of the gear fits snugly onto the square top of the handle shaft. Replace the handle shaft back into the hole where removed in step 8.
  13. Install new large gear by pushing it down onto the mixer shaft until the large gear rests on the small gear.
  14. Replace the cover plate with the handle shaft hole closest to the back of the toilet.
  15. Put the four black spacers that you removed in step 6 over the holes for the cover plate screws and fit screws inside the black spacers.
  16. Finish pushing the plate down until the plate fits over the top of the mixer shaft snugly.
  17. Reinstall the four cover screws on the plate using a standard screwdriver.
  18. Put the top back on, replace the handle and reinstall the shear pin.
  19. Put the toilet in place and reconnect the vent pipe.
