Replacing the Shear Pin - Models: 60 XL, 20 Deluxe
- Unplug the electricity.
- Disconnect the vent pipe and lift slightly on the front of the unit and pull the toilet forward.
- Unscrew the retaining nut from the switch behind the seat and push the switch inside the unit.

- Remove the thermostat knob by gently prying upward with a standard screwdriver.
- Unscrew the compost cover retaining nut by using a standard screwdriver and turning the nut counter-clockwise. Remove the top by lifting on the front of the top while pushing in on the switch. Once the switch has cleared the hole in the top, lift on the rear of the top. The top may stick slightly due to silicon sealant used in production.

- Remove the four mounting screws from the mixer motor
.
- Lift off the plate holding the micro switch.
- Turn the mixer motor over so you can see the broken shear pin.
- With a small punch or nail, tap out the broken shear pin. (Some penetrating oil may be needed for the shear pin to be removed.)
- Insert the new shear pin by tapping it into place, taking caution so the new shear pin does not get broken or the end on which you are tapping does not mushroom.
- Reinstall the mixer motor, ensuring that the shear pin on the bottom of the shaft of the motor slides into the slot in the mixer shaft.

- Replace the micro switch plate as removed in step 7.
- Check the compost for objects that may have blocked the mixing arm. If the compost is dry and hard, use the hand rake to loosen and add some water to get the compost into a uniformly moist homogenous state.
- Replace the four mounting screws on the mixer motor as removed in step 6.
- Put the top back on the unit by reinstalling the compost cover retaining nut and reconnect the nut holding the micro switch in place.
- Plug the unit into a 120V AC outlet and test the operation of the unit.
- Put the toilet in place and reconnect the vent pipe.
