A few questions about the 10 Standard. We would like to use the 10 instead of the 30 so we don't have to deal with the leeching (we have clay soil, so drainage is difficult).

- How does the mixing work-is it just the handle shown at the back of the seat? How long should it be mixed after use?
- What are the electrical requirements-does the unit need to be supplied with power 24/7? What if were only using it on the weekends-could we put it on a timer so that it turned on the day we arrived, and off the day after we left?
- Is the heater always on? What happens if the machine were to not have electricity?
- Does the fan need to run 24/7? Can the fan be hooked up to a separate power source (like the solar panel for the 30 NE)?

We purchased a Biolet XL toilet a few years ago and for the most part absoultely love it. Some times there is a terrible odor that is outside the building. We've tried a wind directional pipe, we've tried raising the stack 3 feet about the roof line and we've tried leaving the fan running during the week when we are not up there. We even us the mulch purchased directly from you. No corners are skimped here, but we need your help. Can you please tell us if there is anything else we can do or what we are doing wrong. We would greatly appreciate your help. The smell is quite embarassing when we have visitors. Is there some sort of freshener or would a natural potpourri added to the mulch help?

We have a BioLet (either 60XL or 20 Deluxe) ... (Jane Burton)

We have a BioLet (either 60XL or 20 Deluxe) installed in the dock house at our cabin. It only gets used during the summer/fall and mostly for liquid waste. We shut it down for the winter as it's in an unheated space. This spring when I went to start it up, I noticed that the toilet paper had not decomposed from the previous year.

My questions are:

1) What do I need to do at start-up each season. Should I add more mulch and liquid and in what proportion? (There is still some mulch left from the previous year)

2) As it's mostly used for liquid waste during the summer, how much compost/liquid should I be adding on a regular basis? I think it gets too dry from only occasional use. Can I just add water to the bowl or should I add compost/water mix?

Thanks.

My interest in a composting toilet is due to ... (Lynne Horton)

My interest in a composting toilet is due to having no pool bath. The toilet would not be used most of the time and lightly when we have young guests. It is likely that the waste would be all or mostly urine. Is a composting toilet suitable for such a purpose?

Is electricity used only when there is waste to process? I am keen to conserve both water and energy so I am interested in the efficiency of this toilet under the kind of usage I have described.

I look forward to hearing from you.

The compost is not to wet and is not to dry and empties without any problems. We have tried a wind directional vent and also a standard vent with no difference for either one. The total height of the vent is about 20 feet from the ground. The smell is most notable in the evening when we are sitting by the campfire with friends. The odor is terribly embarrassing and we have tried everything we can think of to get rid of the awful smell. Can anyone help us?

We have a palapa (palm roof, plywood/woven palm walls, palm pole structural members) 10 feet from the Sea of Cortez on Bahia Concepcion, Baja, Mexico. Some of the other 35 palapas on this particular beach have upgraded to composting toilets - a good environmental move in our opinion. Daytime temps there rarely below 70 (winter) usually in 80s & 90s May to November. No temp differential between inside and outside. Some days windy from 10am-6pm, some dead still. Two people there one month fall, maybe 2 or 3 1 week visits winter/spring, occasional company during same periods. Here are the Qs: 1. Assuming the NE model (we have solar power), would we need the DC fan? 2. Your site talks about trading out bins when 3/4 full, and moving the bin outside to continue decomposition process. If no one is there to aerate it and/or "shake it up" how can the process continue? Also, there is no "yard" per se to put the full bin that has been removed. Won't it smell if placed close to the palapa, or within the palapa in the garage area, to continue composting, particularly if not aerated? How long does this continuation of the process take before the contents of the bin can be safely spread on vegetation? Thanks for your response to these questions specific to our situation.

I am building a hunting cabin and the building permit requires a composting toilet that is NSF #41-1999 certified. Does the BioLet NE 30 carry this certification?
Thanks.
